Frugal Fannie's Spent 43 Years Being "Worth the Trip." Westwood Has a Few Weeks Left to Make It.

Frugal Fannie's Fashion and Shoe Warehouse at 24 Wilson Way still hasn't named its last day. Its going-out-of-business sale has been running since Thursday, Sept. 24. As of the latest reporting, there is still no official final day of business. The date Westwood residents can plan around is Wednesday, Nov. 11. After that, gift cards and merchandise credits can no longer be redeemed.

Plenty of households in town still have a Frugal Fannie's card in a junk drawer or a wallet. For them, the store's last chapter is less about one closing day and more about a deadline that comes sooner than most people expect.

The Warehouse That Told Everyone Else to Drive Here

The store's origin explains why so many of those cards exist. According to the announcement on PR Newswire, Kathleen and Orrin Doxer opened Frugal Fannie's in 1983 in a leased Westwood warehouse. At first it was open only a few days a week. It grew to four Greater Boston locations, and after the 2001 recession the other stores closed while the Wilson Way flagship kept going.

The pitch was always aimed at people who had to make the drive. The same release describes the store as a no-frills warehouse with merchandise that kept changing. Kathleen Doxer appeared as "Fannie" in its TV ads, promising the place was "worth the trip," while the women who shopped there called it their "best kept secret." The company described shopping together with girlfriends, mothers and daughters as part of its mission.

That mission is why gift cards pile up. A store built on mothers shopping with daughters, and on friends making a day of it, is a store people give as a present. Boston.com's coverage of the closing gathered customer memories of buying prom dresses and wedding dresses there, and of coming back for other special occasions. Occasions like those produce gift cards, and those gift cards now expire on a fixed date.

The building's location fits the same story. Westwood Patch places it near Route 1 on the Westwood–Norwood line. That is a destination address, set apart from High Street and the town center.

Four Dates, and Only One of Them Is Yours

  1. Sept. 24, 2026. The going-out-of-business sale began at the Westwood store.
  2. Oct. 7, 2026. This was the last day to return items bought before Sept. 24. MassLive reported the deadline, and it has already passed.
  3. Nov. 11, 2026. This is the last day to redeem gift cards and merchandise credits, according to both MassLive and NBC Boston.
  4. Nov. 23, 2026. A state Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification filing covers 214 employees, with layoffs slated to begin on this date, Westwood Patch reported.

The fourth date is the one most likely to be mistaken for a closing day. Patch and MassLive both treat the WARN timeline as separate from a confirmed final day of business. The workforce side of the story isn't settled either. WCVB reported on Sept. 23 that a letter to employees said there would be "no layoffs" and that staff could stay until they chose to leave. The state filing the next day projected layoffs beginning in late November.

For a shopper, that leaves one firm date. Whatever happens to the doors after Nov. 11, a gift card is worth nothing after that day. Every purchase made during the liquidation is final, so a card spent in the last week can't be undone.

What the Last Weeks Look Like Inside

SB360 Capital Partners was hired to run the liquidation. The release describes apparel, outerwear, occasion dresses, jewelry, accessories and home accents on the floor, with further markdowns to come. Liquidation sales usually thin out as the weeks go on. That makes the Nov. 11 deadline matter even more for anyone hoping to spend a card on something they actually want.

The owners explained the closing in plain terms. They cited key staff retirements and a lease ending with no renewal options. In the statement Westwood Patch published, the business said, "After 43 years, the time has come to end Frugal Fannie's," and added, "This is a very sad time for us and maybe some of you." Kathleen Doxer put it more personally in the PR Newswire release:

"This store has been our life."

In the same release, she called longtime staff family and decades-long customers friends.

Practical details are harder to find than they used to be. The store's own directions-and-hours page was returning an error at last check. Before you drive over on a weekday afternoon, check the Frugal Fannie's homepage or call the store.

What Comes Next for 24 Wilson Way

So far, nothing about the building's future is public. Westwood's assessment roll lists 24 Wilson Way as parcel 23-232, valued at $10,392,600 for FY2026, up from $10,392,100 in FY2025. The town's list of current Planning Board applications covers 2026 cases through the Oct. 13 meeting and shows no filing for the address. That Planning Board page is the public place to watch for one.

The Rest of the Season Runs on Firmer Dates

The store's ending is open-ended. Most of what else is on Westwood's calendar between now and Thanksgiving has a set date, a set room and, in some cases, a set sign-up rule. The Westwood Public Library and Hale carry most of it.

A few rows deserve more detail. The Halloween Storytime listing names the Main Library meeting room but also describes the event as online, so check the format before you bring costumed toddlers. The Escape the Haunted Library slots are booked by time, and Friday evening before Halloween is likely to fill. The Diwali Festival takes no tickets at the door, which makes it the one November event where planning ahead is required.

The Hale scavenger hunt falls on the Friday after Thanksgiving, which gives visiting family something to do outdoors. The trails it follows now come with a long-term guarantee. The Trustees announced that on Aug. 21, 2026, it completed two conservation restrictions permanently protecting 1,109 acres of Hale Education land in Westwood and Dover. The restrictions keep public recreation access, and the land connects to a contiguous open-space block of 2,172 acres.

On Washington Street, a smaller newcomer is keeping later hours. Ron's Gourmet Ice Cream lists a Westwood shop at 305 Washington St., with fall hours that started Sept. 1: Sunday through Thursday 1 to 9 p.m., and Friday and Saturday noon to 10 p.m.

For Frugal Fannie's, the calendar comes down to one entry. Gift cards and merchandise credits work through Wednesday, Nov. 11, and every purchase is final.
